Here is a nice 1964 Jazz Bass that I bought locally. It's been played, but it's all there with the exception of two changed pots (dated from 1985) and the missing bridge and pickup covers.
Here are the details that authenticate the year the instrument was made: Pot code on the one original pot - 1376420, neck date 7MAY64A (A refers to the width of the neck, this neck is 1 1/2 inches at the nut), body stamp in the pickup cavity from 1964.
Pre CBS jazz basses are hard to find, they are highly sought after by collectors and players alike. This on would be a great player for someone out there - it's got the sound, feel and overall look of an excellent vintage bass.
The back of the neck shows natural playwear that you would expect at first clance. The frets however are surprisingly lacking wear as compared too the rest of the bass. The frets are original and the bass currently is set up with flatwound strings. I am assuming that the bass was played with flatwounds nearly it's entire life or the frets would certainly be heavily worn or needing replacement. The neck is true and plays great. The one small structural issue with the bass is the truss rod nut and a small repair to the end of the fretboard. It appears that someone used the wrong size screwdrive to perform a truss rod adjustment. There is one of the teeth on the truss rod nut that has been broken off. In the process a chip of wood was cracked at the end of the neck, see the pictures. This area of wood was glued back and it appears as though it was done a long time ago - the area is very stable and very hard to notice at all without giving the guitar a serious inspection.
Otherwise the bass is stock and simply showing wear. The back of the body must have received some fairly serious buckle rash that bothered someone, they took either some light sandpaper or steel wool to the area to smooth out the area of rough finish. This was done only to what was probably a rough edge of finish on the upper side of the back, it does not go down into the wood or reshape the body at all. The bass will probably need to be intonated - I will leave the restringing and setup to the buyer to do so as he or she pleases.
The original pickguard is cracked at the lower horn, the screw there holds the small cracked piece in place. The rest of the bass is original and fully functional. It really is a great feeling instrument... It weighs in at 9 lbs 1 ounce. The original case is included and although it shows some wear all the latches, hinges and handle work fine.
